Rite Aid used to be called Thrifty back in the day. I'm glad they didn't change the name of the ice cream parlor. It's nostalgia all the way. I remember I used to buy a single scoop of strawberry in a waffle cone every weekend when my mom and I would walk to the mall. It was a little treat for ourselves after running errands.
On this trip, I get a single scoop of butter pecan in a cup. And it still tastes great after all these year.
Next...yesterday, I took a trip up to Malibu with a friend, who was doing some location scouting for a project he was doing. I was happy to come along to help him. Besides, it got me out of the house. Granted, I'm working on my own little project at the moment, but I think I needed a little bit of relaxation.
We've been having some odd weather here in SoCal. I'm not complaining, but usually this time of year we would be having some kind of heat wave. I'm not used to wearing a sweater in July.
After the scout we were pretty hungry. Being at the beach does take quite a bit of energy. We headed over Neptune's Net which was just down the road from where we were. Only if I lived closer, I'd come by this place more.
The delicious selections
A half pint of warm clam chowder with some saltine crackers
Chili Cheese Fries
I loved the clam chowder. It was warm with nice chunks of potato and clam. It was perfect for the overcast weather in the area. I like to crunch up the crackers and pour then into the cup. They also have one where you can have it with a sourdough bread bowl. I would have gotten that, but I ordered some chili cheese fries. The one thing I liked about their chili is the nice chunks of tomato and whole beans in it. My kind of chili. Mmmm...
The neat thing is the location as well. Right near the beach with a view of the water.
Smell that fresh ocean water. Mmmmmm...
It was a nice afternoon spent.

Funny, I haven't been to California more then three times in my life and Neptune's Nest is the one place I have been!! I had the clam chowder too..it's my favorite!
Fun post, Jenn!! Strange though...you're weather must all be on vacation in Indiana... you're in a sweater and I'm (wishing I ate less so I could be) in just my skivvies!! Hot as haddes over here! ;)
This post hit on two fave foods centered on my most favorite texture: CREAMY! Funny that they are complete opposites - cold ice cream and hot soup but I would happily eat both at the same meal!
I used to LOVE Thrifty's ice cream...especially the Chocolate Brownie. I took Maya there the other day and I was so excited for her to try my favorite flavor and she didn't like it! I was really disappointed!
Malibu is beautiful...I've heard Neptune's Net is great!
I totally relate with the childhood nostalgia thing. Last night, for some reason I was laying in bed thinking of the grilled cheese sandwiches and crinkly fries my mom would take us out for at Friendlys (a restaurant chain in the New England area).
They also did the most fabulous ice creams. One day I hope to go to friendly's again just for grilled cheese and ice cream. Maybe its a little silly, but I so want it.
*kisses* HH
I used to love Thrifty's ice cream too. It was such a treat to go there after dinner or in the afternoon for a scoop of mint chip. I was at a Rite Aid recently and was tempted to get a scoop. Maybe next time I will!
I love butter pecan ice cream! Great choice. The clam chowder looks great too.
I always do love your reviews! :D
I've never heard of Thrifty...I suppose it's a west coast thing!
We're having a serious heat wave! We must of traded weather...take yours back! haha I hate it. Those fries look awesome!
Wow I wish we had ice cream in our Rite Aids here! Glad you had a fun day!
Yum, what a great couple of faves and a great way to spend the day
I've never tried Thrifty ice cream, wonder whether I can find it at the Rite-Aids in the Northeast? Malibu looks gorgeous (and so do those chili cheese fries lol!)
